Architect Chosen For Affton Early Childhood Center Project

“St. Louis County building officials have given their preliminary blessing to the Affton School District’s plan to convert a sheet-metal shop at 9832 Reavis Road into an early childhood education site.

At the school board’s April 19 meeting, Kromm, Rikimaru and Johansen Inc. (KRJ) architects — the firm that helped the Brentwood School District establish its ECE center — was chosen from among four bidders to design the type of structure Affton envisions.

“We have dealt with the issues of title, zoning, environmental. Technically, we still have not closed on the property. But it’s full steam ahead,” said District Business Manager John Brazeal.

The property still must be rezoned as residential, but Brazeal said, “We are confident the rezoning application will be successful. The risk of an unfavorable outcome is unlikely.”

KRJ’s initial estimate for the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, kitchen and fire protection work is $2 million. The design firm’s fee is set at 7.5 percent of final project cost. The estimate also states the work should be completed by June 15, 2012.

Brazeal said he is “impressed by the philosophy (KRJ) seems to have, which emphasizes learning objectives and goals.”

The board approved the agreement to retain KRJ subject to review by legal counsel.”
